Blackwater is the major town of a significant coal mining area in Central Queensland, Australia. At the 2006 census, Blackwater had a population of 5,031.[1]
Six major open cut coal mines and one underground dot the landscape surrounding the town and provide its main employment opportunities. The town is also situated close to the Blackdown Tableland National Park which lies to the south. Emerald is 74km to the west.
Blackwater is supposedly named after the Blackwater Creek which apparently was first observed to flow with black water, this may have been caused by tree roots growing into the creek. Coal deposits were discovered there by Ludwig Leichhardt in 1845.

Homicide detectives are intensifying the investigation into the suspected murder of Francis Foley, who was last seen December 23, 2008.Supplied
Mr Foley was last seen alive shopping in Emerald before lunch time on December 23, 2008, and later that day at the Rubyvale Post Office.
On the night of December 24, gunshots were heard in the vicinity of the then 62-year-old's billy boulder cabin at Reward.
Police found blood and an exploded gas bottle at the site.
“Frank's bank accounts haven't been touched since, and there's been no attempt to contact relatives,” said State Crime Operations Command Homicide Investigation Unit Inspector Glen Farmer.
“His pride and joy, an older model Mercedes, is still there and from talking to a number of people, Frank wasn't known to have walked great distances.
“Frank had lived on the Gemfields for some three years, and was well known and well respected,” Inspector Farmer said.
“He was a bit of a handyman, always willing to assist other people with small jobs and helping them out.
“He was a quiet fellow who didn't have any known enemies.”
Inspector Farmer said despite intensive investigations in conjunction with Rockhampton CIB detectives, including an earlier search of a dam at Washpool, police still had no suspects or murder weapon.
Yesterday, posters appealing for information were placed at Emerald and the Gemfields.
“We hold grave concerns for Frank because there has been some information that has come forward in our inquiries to date, that on December 24, people heard gunshots in and around the area,” Inspector Farmer said.
“As part of our scientific examination, there is evidence a weapon has been discharged.
“We're confident someone out there knows something. Someone must have heard or seen something.
“It is a remote location, an ideal location for people seeking their fortune.”
Mr Foley was described by his sister, Maureen Allen, as a loner who never put down roots for long. But he was also the man who would give his last $20 to a stranger in need.

It is most unfair, unreasonable and unjust for those debunkers who claim on their websites that the police never sought the assistance of gifted psychics. That, in absolute terms, is not true. Kurt Sonnenfeld (born 1969) was a videographer for FEMA prior to 2002 and was one of four FEMA photographers who were given exclusive access to Ground Zero following the September 11 Attacks in New York in 2001.[1] In addition to the photographs and video he took on behalf of FEMA, he is reputed and claims to have taken additional video footage as well as numerous photographs, some of them since published. He claims that these recorded images will provide evidence about the nature of the Collapse of the World Trade Center when scrutinized by "experts." As of August, 2010, he is seeking such experts to review his footage.[2]

This woman had asked for my help, and I had utterly failed her. Her story had been just so incredible. She described a world where courts need no criminal conviction to remove your child, only the word of a psychiatrist or doctor, and can deny you the chance to call any expert in your defence. A world that uses the “welfare of the child” to gag you from discussing your case. Where even if you prove yourself innocent on appeal, your children may already have been adopted: in which case you will never be allowed to contact them again. A world which had treated her so badly, this rather pretty and utterly normal young woman, that she was sincerely thanking me just for listening.
It had taken three calls from this lady and her boyfriend, a clean-cut army bloke, before I had agreed to go down to their provincial semi. We sat in their front room with the curtains drawn while they got out box after box of papers. And I got my first inkling of what it is like to go through the door into the secret state.
This particular case had started, as many do, with a custody battle. The mother had started to worry about her ex-partner's behaviour during his visits to their daughter. She approached social services to ask if they could supervise his visits. When the child then told a teacher that her father had touched her in bad places, the police were called. They filmed the child repeating the allegations. The upshot? A psychologist who watched the film but never met the mother, father or daughter wrote a report alleging that the mother had coached the daughter to lie. He never appeared in court, and was never crossexamined. Yet the court, encouraged by social workers, accepted his view. The judge ordered that the daughter should go to live with her father - a man the mother was convinced was an abuser.'' end of quote

The wife of Melbourne multimillionaire Herman Rockefeller has heard how her husband was killed, dismembered and his remains set on fire after he went to a house to have sex with an unemployed alcoholic.
Vicky Rockefeller knew nothing of her husband's double life in which the Harvard graduate advertised in a swingers magazine so he could have sex with strangers, the Victorian Supreme Court heard on Monday.
Mr Rockefeller was killed in January after he failed to bring along a partner to have sex with swingers Bernadette Denny, 42, and Mario Schembri, 58, at their unit at Hadfield in Melbourne's north.
He told the swingers his name was Andy Kingston and he had a wife called Jenny who would join in the sex, prosecutor Chris Beale SC said.
"This was false as his actual wife Vicky knew nothing about it," Mr Beale said on Monday.
Ms Rockefeller sat just a few metres from the prison dock where Denny, a short, unemployed alcoholic with a dependant personality, sat.
Separated from Denny by a prison guard was her much older partner Schembri, a bald, semi-literate handyman.
